Milwaukee Brewer pitching coach Dave Stewart resigned Monday, saying he planned to care for his mother and spend more time with family.

“This is what my gut was telling me to do,” Stewart said. “After sitting around and really evaluating the things that are important--or should be important--most of those things I’ve bypassed for better than half of my adult life.

“I just woke up one day and decided to do something different.”

The 45-year-old Stewart was in his first season as the Brewers’ pitching instructor.

Bill Castro, Milwaukee’s bullpen coach since 1991, will take over as pitching coach for the remainder of the season.

The Chicago White Sox traded catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. to the Colorado Rockies for a minor league pitcher. Alomar, 36, who was batting .287 with seven homers and 25 runs batted in, was traded for right-hander Enemencio Pacheco.

It will be the fourth major league team for Alomar, the most valuable player of the 1997 All-Star game. The 12-year veteran played for the Cleveland Indians before signing with the White Sox on Dec. 18, 2000.

Pacheco was signed by Colorado as a non-drafted free agent Jan. 15, 1997. In Class A this season, he is 2-2 with six saves and a 3.16 earned-run average in 51 1/3 innings.

Roger Clemens was back with the New York Yankees after a rehabilitation stint in the minors, but the team isn’t sure when he will be activated from the 15-day disabled list. Clemens threw in the bullpen before Monday night’s game against the Texas Rangers and said the strained right groin that sent him to the disabled list July 13 feels better.

The Yankees said Clemens will throw from the mound again today and then they will decide whether Clemens needs another rehab start, or if he’s ready to take his turn in the rotation Thursday.
