Mariners Rally Again, Keep Pace With Angels

John Olerud’s run-scoring single in the eighth inning sent the Seattle Mariners to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers Monday night at Seattle.

Edgar Martinez hit a two-run homer, and Bret Boone tied it with a sixth-inning single as Seattle rallied from a 3-0 deficit. The Mariners remained percentage points behind the Angels for first place in the American League West.

Mark McLemore drew a leadoff walk in the eighth, stole second and went to third on catcher Brandon Inge’s throwing error. Olerud followed with a single to center off Julio Santana (3-3) to score McLemore with the go-ahead run.

Arthur Rhodes (7-2) worked out of a jam in the eighth to get the victory in relief of starter Freddy Garcia.

Kazuhiro Sasaki got two outs for his 27th save in 31 chances, striking out Inge with a runner on to end it.

Rhodes came on after Garcia walked Damion Easley to start the eighth. Bobby Higginson singled, but Randall Simon grounded into a double play. Rhodes struck out Robert Fick to end the inning.

The Mariners tied it, 3-3, in the sixth with an unearned run. McLemore singled, went to second on Inge’s passed ball and scored on Boone’s single to center that chased Jose Lima.

The Mariners ended a 16-inning scoreless drought in the fourth on Boone’s walk and Martinez’s sixth homer of the season, his second in three games.

Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki is in an 0-for-13 slide after going 0 for 4.

Cleveland 8, Oakland 6--Lee Stevens hit a three-run home run to highlight a five-run seventh for the Indians, who rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 6-3 to win at Oakland. The A’s have lost five of six, dropping four games out of first place in the AL West.

Trailing by three going into the seventh, Milton Bradley hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and Stevens gave Cleveland the lead with his home run off reliever Mike Magnante (0-2).

New York 9, Texas 2--Orlando Hernandez pitched six impressive innings and Rondell White hit a two-run homer as the Yankees won at Arlington, Texas. Jorge Posada homered, drove in two runs and reached base four times for the Yankees, who have won 16 of their last 22 at The Ballpark in Arlington.

Hernandez (6-3) threw five shutout innings before Carl Everett’s solo homer in the sixth. He gave up five hits, struck out five and walked none. Ranger starter Kenny Rogers (11-6) got off to a shaky start against his former team and lost his sixth consecutive decision to the Yankees.

Kansas City 4, Toronto 1--Paul Byrd threw his fourth consecutive complete game as the Royals won at Kansas City, Mo. Carlos Beltran homered and drove in three runs for the Royals, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay 6, Baltimore 1--Paul Wilson pitched eight strong innings to snap a personal 12-game winless streak as the Devil Rays won at St. Petersburg, Fla.
