“Austin Powers in Goldmember” shagged a swaggering $76.6 million in its opening weekend and Thursday evening preview. The third installment of the Mike Myers comedy series was the fifth-biggest opener of all time, third-biggest opening of 2002, the biggest July opening and the largest for a comedy.

“Austin” bumped the solemn “Road to Perdition” from the top spot, but the Tom Hanks-Paul Newman drama managed to earn $11.1 million in its third weekend, for a total of $65.6 million.
Disney’s family film “The Country Bears” only managed to place No. 6 with $5.3 million for a per-theater average of $2,080.
Among limited-release films, the acclaimed Robert Evans documentary “The Kid Stays in the Picture” took in $80,087 on just four screens.
