Rev. David S. Toolan, 66; Examined Links Between Religion, Environment
The Rev. David S. Toolan, 66, a Jesuit priest and theologian whose writings examined the connection between the environment and religion, died Tuesday of colon cancer at a hospital in New York City.
Born in Portland, Maine, Toolan earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and enrolled at Columbia Law School. After a year, however, he quit to enter a Jesuit seminary. He was ordained in 1967.
Toolan earned master’s degrees from Fordham University and Woodstock College and a doctorate from Southern Methodist University.
Toolan had served as associate editor of America, a Catholic weekly with a national circulation, since 1989. Before that, he reviewed books and was associate editor of the Catholic magazine Commonweal.
“David was a brilliant writer with wide-ranging interests,” said Thomas J. Reese, S.J., editor of America.
His books include “Facing West From California’s Shores” and “At Home in the Cosmos.”
