Under a blazing sun, distraught crowds offered prayers and placed flowers at a memorial to more than 7,000 Muslims killed in the town of Srebrenica seven years ago, the worst civilian massacre in Europe since World War II.

The estimated 5,000 mourners came from across Bosnia-Herzegovina to the former silver mining town 50 miles northeast of the capital, Sarajevo, remembering those killed when Bosnian Serb forces overran what had been declared a United Nations “safe haven” during the 1992-95 war.

About 2,000 police officers guarded the ceremony, whose participants came on 112 buses.
