Readers should be aware that the SafeSit seat belt adjuster mentioned in the June 9 Gear & Gadgets column has not been tested or approved by any federal regulatory body and is not an adequate substitute for a booster seat.

The fact that a child thinks she or he is too big for a booster is a nuisance but irrelevant. It is the adult’s responsibility to ensure the child’s safety. In California, children under 6 years old and less than 60 pounds must use a booster seat.
