Founded in 1974, Ailey II is a 12-dancer ensemble that not only tours in places that have never seen the larger Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, but also develops its own repertory. In Malibu, the company is dancing a suite of Ailey excerpts (highlights of “Blues Suite,” “Streams,” “Hidden Rites,” “Isba” and “Escapades”), plus three works created since the turn of the century. Scott Rink’s “Full On Night” uses music by PJ Harvey, Darrell Grand Moultrie’s “Aspects of a Vibe,” is set to a Tito Puente remix, and Robert Battle’s “Takademe” develops what the New York Times called “a savvy deconstruction of Indian Kathak dance rhythms” from recordings by Sheila Chandra.

More than 200 dealers from around the world will display their treasures of the printed page this weekend at the 35th annual California International Antiquarian Book Fair at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel. Rare and valuable books, manuscripts, autographs, graphics, prints and maps will be among the items for sale. In addition, the show features two exhibits--”A Journey of Wonder: A Visit to Fantasy Literature,” devoted to popular fantasy literature from “The Iliad” to “Harry Potter,” and “Rescued Treasures: The Art and Science of Rare Book Conservation”--and an intranet book locater.

Nicole Kidman is one package that single guy Ben Chaplin should have held off on opening in Jez Butterworth’s thriller “Birthday Girl.” Kidman, a recent Golden Globe winner for “Moulin Rouge,” plays a Russian mail-order bride ordered over the Internet by lonely banker Chaplin. Her birthday brings the arrival of her two “cousins” from the motherland (Mathieu Kassovitz and Vincent Cassel).

“Birthday Girl,” rated R for sexuality and language, opens Friday in general release.

Ribbitt.... Oregon’s Imago Theatre hops its new “creature-theater” show, “Frogz,” into Southern California for a stop on its national tour. The show creates a surreal world of penguins, sloths and amphibians in a zany combination of circus, vaudeville and zoo presented with masks, movement and outlandish costumes.

Shakespeare, meet Kafka. In Jean-Claude Grumberg’s seriocomic fable, “Perchance to Dream,” an actor in rehearsals for “Hamlet” finds himself on trial for a murder committed in his dreams. He careens among the worlds of reality, theater and imagination. This U.S. premiere at the Open Fist Theatre Company is staged by Romanian director Florinel Fatulescu.

Two generations of jazz fans will find something to shout about this weekend at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.
