Coslet Is Hired to Jump-Start the Cowboys’ Offense

Bruce Coslet has just what the Dallas Cowboys are looking for: NFL play-calling experience and a vast knowledge of the West Coast offense.

Coslet, the former coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets, was hired Wednesday as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator.

Coslet replaces Jack Reilly, who was reassigned after Dallas finished with a 5-11 record for the second consecutive season.

Cowboy owner Jerry Jones hopes a more up-tempo offense will be the solution.

“I would say the offense I’m used to running is a multiple offense,” Coslet said. “We’ll do some West Coast, some vertical passing, some old San Diego Chargers’ downfield stuff. It’s really hard to pin one little name on it. I would like to hope it’s the offense that gets us into the end zone the most.”

Coslett was 47-78 in nine seasons as coach of the Jets and Bengals.

But Coslet was successful as an offensive coordinator for the Bengals, who had the NFL’s top-rated offense in 1986 and 1988 and led the league in rushing in 1988 and 1989.

New England receiver Terry Glenn sued the NFL, saying it discriminated against him for a disability that prevented him from following certain rules in the league’s substance-abuse policy.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan alleged that since at least 1999, Glenn has had chronic depression, a disability recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Glenn argued in the lawsuit that he should not have been suspended by the NFL for the first four games this season for violating the substance-abuse policy by missing a drug test.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league hadn’t seen the lawsuit.

Buffalo re-signed quarterback Alex Van Pelt to a five-year contract worth about $6 million.... Linebacker Richard Jordan and cornerback Central McClellion agreed to two-year contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs.... Kurt Schottenheimer was hired as defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. He has been an NFL assistant for 15 years. Schottenheimer’s brother, Marty, is San Diego’s new coach.

Former New York Giant coach Bill Parcells and his wife, Judith, were granted a divorce Jan. 16 by a judge in Monmouth County, N.J., the New York Post reported Wednesday.

In court documents, Judith Parcells complained her husband of nearly 40 years had grown “cold and distant.”

The couple has three grown daughters.
