Whirlpool Recalling Fire-Prone Appliances
Whirlpool Corp. is recalling about 1.4 million dehumidifiers that can overheat and start fires, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
The devices, sold nationwide from February 1997 through December 2001 under the Whirlpool, Kenmore and ComfortAire brand names, are white plastic, about 2 feet high and have a front-mounted water bucket. There were 13 reports of fires caused by the appliances, the government said.
Consumers were told to arrange for free repairs by calling Whirlpool toll-free (866) 640-7139.
