Citizen Representation
Mayor James Hahn’s current selection of appointees fails to accurately represent the districts that helped him win the mayoral office, much less Los Angeles itself (“Most Hahn Appointees Are From Wealthy Areas,” Jan. 24). Hopefully, Hahn will not allow the fate of poorer districts to be shaped by those who see the communities’ needs in terms of facts and figures instead of people.
If there are any postelection favors to be done, Hahn needs panels that are more diverse for decisions affecting South-Central, the San Fernando Valley and everywhere between. To suggest that some areas are not home to potential civilian panel members is a poor excuse. Those willing to serve are qualified for one simple reason--it’s their home.
