Sorry to Horn In on Your Angle, Bob, but ...
Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe writes that the “Rams have the greatest offense the game ever has known.” He was referring to today’s St. Louis Rams.
However, another Ram team, the L.A. edition of 1950, might have been even better. That Ram team averaged 38.8 points during the regular season compared to 31.4 for the St. Louis Rams.
The modern Rams have such celebrated offensive stars as quarterback Kurt Warner and running back Marshall Faulk and are deep at wide receiver. The 1950 Rams had four Hall of Famers, quarterbacks Bob Waterfield and Norm Van Brocklin and ends Elroy Hirsch and Tom Fears, along with such notable running backs as Tank Younger and Deacon Dan Towler.

Rose Red redux: Tom FitzGerald in the San Francisco Chronicle: “Mike Tyson’s Connecticut mansion is off the market, according to the Wall Street Journal. It was originally priced at $22 million in 1998, then $12.9 million in 1999 and $5 million in 2000.
“Maybe potential buyers were turned off by the sign out front: ‘Come on in--I won’t bite you.’”

Revising history: Syndicated columnist Norman Chad: “I am firmly convinced that, had instant replay existed in 1776, the American Revolution would have been overturned and we’d all be eating kidney pies at this moment.”
*
More Chad: On the replay call that wrecked the Raiders: “Geez, the next time I’m charged with tax fraud by the IRS, my defense will be the Tuck Rule.”
*
It’s coming: Scott Ostler in the San Francisco Chronicle on the same subject: “The ground can’t cause a fumble.

Tired whine: Ron Rapoport in the Chicago Sun-Times: “I’ll take 537: What is the over/under on how many times between now and Super Bowl Sunday we hear New England players say, ‘We don’t get any respect.’?”
*
Potential problem: From comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “The New England Patriots have a strong safety named Lawyer Milloy. You know there’s going to be trouble when you’ve got a guy named Lawyer on the team.
“If the Rams are called for illegal use of hands, they may not only get a 15-yard penalty, they may get a subpoena and a court date.”

And finally: Bernie Lincicome in the Rocky Mountain News: “The basic difference between a sportswriter and a sports-talker is that one wishes he could write the Great American novel and the other wishes he could read it.”
