Pedestrian Trying to Cross Street Is Killed
A man was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night as he tried to cross a Long Beach street on the same day police issued more than 200 traffic tickets targeting motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
Joseph Newman, 22, of Long Beach died after the 8 p.m. accident in the 4800 block of Pacific Coast Highway, said Long Beach Police Officer David Marander.
Newman, who was not in a crosswalk, was struck as he attempted to cross, Marander said. The driver, 21, was interviewed after hitting Newman, but he was not arrested, Marander said.
Long Beach police issued 214 traffic tickets and impounded 12 vehicles during the daylong countywide operation, which did not include the stretch of roadway where the fatal accident occurred.
