Tens of Thousands Rally for Opposition Candidate
From Times Wire Reports
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in the Madagascan capital, Antananarivo, for a second day to demand that opposition candidate Marc Ravalomanana be declared winner of a presidential vote.
Witnesses said about 85,000 people demonstrated peacefully in the town’s central square--in contrast to Monday, when police fired tear gas at unruly protesters.
Provisional results from Dec. 16 elections on the Indian Ocean island have shown that neither Ravalomanana, the mayor of Antananarivo, nor President Didier Ratsiraka won an outright majority.
