A blood drive is scheduled to boost county reserves, which are expected to dwindle after the holidays.

A mobile unit operated by United Blood Services of Ventura County will be at the Boys & Girls Club on Jan. 9 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Donors must weigh at least 110 and be at least 17 years old.

The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks spurred an unprecedented number of donations, said Carolyn Tyner, the blood service’s executive director. However, she expected there to be just 2 1/2 days’ worth of reserves after New Year’s Day.

The service, which runs the county’s only blood bank, tries to maintain reserves for five to seven days.

“We’re hopeful we’ll be able to sustain some of the enthusiasm resulting from our opportunity to be patriotic citizens,” Tyner said.

To make an appointment, sign up at the Boys & Girls Club at 2850 Lemon Drive or call the club at 527-4437.
