Suspected Armed Robber Kills Himself
A gunman who allegedly held up a Huntington Beach bar, stole a sport-utility vehicle from a customer at gunpoint and led police on a chase fatally shot himself after driving the SUV onto the shore in Newport Beach.
The man was identified as Curtis Dale Radig Jr., 36, of Huntington Beach. Radig died from a single gunshot to the head, Huntington Beach Police Lt. Bruce Kelly said.
Police said the gunman entered Redz Juke Joint at 424 17th St. shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday and pointed a large caliber handgun at the bartender, ordering her to hand over money.
The man fired several shots into the tavern walls and then several more shots at parked cars as he ran from the bar, police said.
The man commandeered a 1995 black Nissan Pathfinder, ordering the 33-year-old owner out at gunpoint.
The SUV was chased by a patrol officer into Newport Beach, where it sped down the length of Balboa Peninsula and onto the sand near the Wedge.
Police said they heard a single gunshot come from the vehicle a short time later.
