Swedish Voting Monitor Spurned by Government

Zimbabwe said it would not accredit the Swedish head of a European Union observer team who arrived for next month’s presidential election, state TV reported.

Foreign Minister Stanislaus Mudenge said Zimbabwe would only accredit those who had been invited. Sweden’s ambassador to the U.N., Pierre Shori, is not one of them.

President Robert Mugabe has allowed EU officials to monitor the poll but objected to representatives from six nations, including Sweden and Britain, that have strongly criticized the often violent seizure of white-owned farms by his supporters.
