Pasadena Set for NFL Vote

The Pasadena City Council will vote Monday on a plan that could pave the way for an NFL team to relocate to the Rose Bowl.

The three-year plan, submitted by the Rose Bowl Operating Committee, was approved this week by the city’s Economic Development and Technology Committee. It is expected to glide through the City Council vote.

“We believe there’s a tremendous opportunity here,” said Darryl Dunn, general manager of the Rose Bowl. “We’re trying to make plans for the future and determine how the Rose Bowl is going to succeed in the long term. The big void in the marketplace right now is the lack of an NFL team.”

The Rose Bowl, which has played host to five Super Bowls, would require extensive renovation to lure an NFL team. There are many environmental, neighborhood and historical complications to making such renovations.

Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn told The Times last weekend he believes L.A. will have an NFL franchise within five years. Although Hahn has supported the Coliseum as a prospective site for a team, he now says he would be open to supporting other potential sites in L.A.
