Celebration Is Sunday
An array of athletes, including soccer players Julie Foudy and Tisha Venturini, basketball players Cynthia Cooper and Ruthie Bolton-Holifield, golfer Kellee Booth, swimmer Dara Torres and surfer Layne Beachley, will be on hand Sunday at Edison Field for the Girls Sports X-travaganza.
The event is expected to draw as many as 7,500 in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the 30th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark 1972 federal antidiscrimination legislation that led to the growth of women’s sports.
The Anaheim gathering is expected to be the largest of more than 1,500 events across the nation honoring women in sports, including a Capitol Hill luncheon today in Washington.
Highlights of the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. event include a basketball clinic with Cooper, the Phoenix Mercury coach and former WNBA most valuable player and two-time Olympian, as well as a golf clinic and a 2 p.m. awards ceremony followed by an autograph session.
