No. 1 Alabama Falls Flat to Utah

Alabama’s first trip to the top of the Associated Press rankings will probably end when the next poll comes out.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide missed nine of their first 10 shots, shot 41% overall and scored a season-low points in Monday night’s 51-49 loss to Utah at Salt Lake City.

“I never get into that No. 1 stuff. I’m happy the team showed heart,” Utah Coach Rick Majerus said. “The wins count all the same. Until they count one win for two wins, I won’t give it any more attention.”

Nick Jacobson led Utah with only 13 points, and he sealed the 1,500th victory in school history by making two free throws with 24.2 seconds left. Tim Frost had nine points for the Utes (8-3).

Alabama (9-1) had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds, but Erwin Dudley missed a putback in the lane. Utah’s Richard Chaney grabbed the rebound as time expired. Chaney hugged the ball and sprinted to midcourt as the Utes celebrated the upset.

“This won’t break us. You walk into an environment like this, and it’s tough,” Alabama Coach Mark Gottfried said. “The place is sold out. There’s no one for us except the guys on our bench.”

No. 4 Arizona 85, Boston 71 -- Luke Walton hopped off the court after re-injuring his troublesome right ankle, and the Wildcats (7-1) defeated the Terriers (5-6) to win the Fiesta Bowl Classic for the 17th time in 18 tries at Tucson.

No. 6 Notre Dame 76, Vanderbilt 63 -- Chris Thomas scored 19 points at South Bend, Ind., to lead the Fighting Irish (11-1), who are off to their best start since 1978-79. The Commodores fell to 6-4.

No. 7 Texas 58, Louisiana Tech 50 -- Brandon Mouton scored 16 points and Coach Rick Barnes earned his 300th career victory when the Longhorns (8-2) defeated the Bulldogs (3-4) at Austin, Texas.

No. 8 Mississippi State 85, South Alabama 74 -- Timmy Bowers and Derrick Zimmerman scored 21 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs (9-1) over the Jaguars (6-5) at Mobile, Ala.

No. 10 Oklahoma 100, North Carolina Asheville 64 -- Ebi Ere scored 19 points and freshman Kevin Bookout had 17 to lead the Sooners (7-2) over the Bulldogs (3-6) at Norman, Okla.

No. 11 Illinois 63, Coppin State 37 -- Brian Cook, the Big Ten’s leading scorer, matched his season average with 20 points to lead the Fighting Illini (9-1) over the Eagles (1-9) at Champaign, Ill.

No. 12 Florida 91, Florida A&M; 58 -- Matt Bonner scored 18 points, making four three-point baskets and the Gators won their 36th consecutive nonconference home game at Gainesville, Fla., with a victory over the Rattlers (3-5).

East Carolina 73, No. 13 Marquette 70 -- Derrick Wiley made two free throws to break a tie with 32 seconds left and the Pirates (9-2) upset the Golden Eagles (8-2) for the second consecutive season at Greenville, N.C., in front of the first sellout crowd at home since 1969.

Toledo 81, No. 14 Michigan State 76 -- Nick Moore scored 19 points as the Rockets (7-4) blew a 13-point second-half lead despite shooting 52% from the field and held on to upset the Spartans (8-3) at East Lansing, Mich.

No. 16 Missouri 65, Valparaiso 47 -- Rickey Paulding scored 22 points and Ricky Clemons had 18 as the Tigers (7-1) opened the second half with a 12-2 run to pull away from the Crusaders (5-6) at Columbia. Mo.

No. 20 Kentucky 115, Tennessee State 87 -- Keith Bogans scored a season-high 26 points and ignited a decisive 13-0 second-half spurt with a series of layups to lead the Wildcats (7-3) over the Tigers (2-7) at Lexington, Ky.

No. 21 Louisiana State 69, New Orleans 57 -- Ronald Dupree had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Tigers (9-1) trailed at halftime but rallied to defeat the Privateers (7-4) at Baton Rouge, La.

No. 23 Wake Forest 96, Bethune Cookman 54 -- Chris Ellis scored 14 points and Vytas Danelius had 12 in a balanced scoring attack to lead the Demon Deacons (8-0) to a rout of the Wildcats (1-6) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Stanford 79, Yale 56 -- Justin Davis recorded his sixth double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cardinal (9-3) over the Bulldogs (5-3) at Palo Alto.

California 77, San Francisco 70 -- Amit Tamir scored 26 points as the Bears (7-2) defeated the Dons (4-7) in a Bay Area showdown at Berkeley.
