Fate of 1,300 Unknown After Cyclone Zoe Hits
From Times Wire Reports
A savage cyclone that hit two remote Pacific islands wiped out communications and left the fate of 1,300 residents unknown.
Cyclone Zoe swept over Tikopia and Anuta on Sunday, with winds possibly gusting up to 223 mph, Australian meteorologists said.
The islets, accessible only by boat, are in the Solomon Islands’ remote Temotu province.
A boat set out today to check the damage. “We are just assuming that those two islands must have been totally devastated,” said Loti Yates of the Disaster Management Office in the Solomons’ capital, Honiara.
