* Long-distance telephone company WorldCom Inc. said its net loss almost doubled in October from the previous month as sales remained flat. The Clinton, Miss.-based company said its October net loss from continuing operations was $205 million, up from $108 million in September. Sales remained at $2.3 billion.

* Cable operator Adelphia Communications Corp. posted a wider net loss of $111.5 million for November, compared with a loss of $104.6 million for October, according to a monthly operating report. Revenue fell slightly to $281.3 million in November from $282.2 million.

* Lockheed Martin Corp. appears to have won a fierce and protracted competition to build a fleet of 48 fighter jets for the Polish air force, a $3.5-billion affirmation of the military and political firepower still wielded by one of the company’s oldest and most lucrative products -- the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the Baltimore Sun reported.

* Broadcom Corp., the biggest maker of semiconductors used in cable modems, bought about 150 patents and patent applications from Woodland Hills-based Unova Inc. for $24 million in cash.
