Embarrassing Lesson in Language Politics
Well, the “Unintended Lesson of the Year” award certainly has to go to MALDEF.
Citizens of Santa Ana distributed petitions to recall a school board member because of his support of bilingual education. Now MALDEF is complaining that the petition wasn’t fair because the Latino citizens of Santa Ana aren’t proficient enough in English to understand the political process.
So is this MALDEF’s official position?: 1. Deemphasize learning English by pushing bilingual education; then, 2. Complain and file frivolous lawsuit because Latino citizens are not sufficiently learned in English to participate in the political process.
And MALDEF can’t see the lesson here?
