Police Fatally Shoot Man Armed With Knives
Inglewood police shot and killed a man early Sunday after he repeatedly stabbed himself and then lunged at a woman with two knives, officials said.
Officers went to the house on Market Street after authorities received a 911 “hang up” call about 12:30 a.m., but the suspect had apparently fled the home, said Inglewood police Lt. Eve Irvine.
The victim called 911 again at 7:15 a.m., and this time officers found the man, armed with two knives, and threatening “to hurt someone,” Irvine said.
Police heard screaming from inside the house, but the man blocked the entry at the front door, Irvine said.
The man ignored orders to drop his knives and began stabbing himself.
Officers fired at least one beanbag round to get him to stop, but it proved ineffective and he continue to wound himself, she said.
The man allowed an older woman and a child to leave the house, but when the woman tried to leave, he “lunged at her in a threatening manner,” Irvine said. “At that time several officers shot the suspect.”
The man was taken to a hospital where he died of his wounds. His name was not released pending notification of family, officials said.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
