Bush Just Can’t Wait for War With Iraq

It is disgusting but not surprising to read “Iraq Falling Short, Bush Says” (Dec. 3). It is less than a week into the inspections that he has demanded for almost a year and, by all accounts, they are going well, which makes President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney even more anxious and determined to get their war by any means and at any cost to the U.S.

Rather than doing their job and dealing with Al Qaeda (the real problem), they continue to raise the bar and beat the war drums. They have long shown their desperation in this regard, singing the same old songs ad nauseam. I think, to save time, The Times and other major newspapers should have their “U.S. Attacks Iraq” headlines ready to go. Perhaps they already do.

Let’s see if I have this right. Bush tells us that if the inspectors find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, that means we start bombing. And, if the inspectors don’t find any weapons of mass destruction, that “proves” that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction, but he is hiding them and has lied to us. That also means that we start bombing. Makes sense to me.

How fitting that Sandy Tolan’s critique of America’s plans to upset the Mideast map came from Berkeley, awash in anti-America and anti-Israel philosophy (Opinion, Dec. 1). In his analysis, Tolan neglected to mention our alternative: waiting until the forces of radical Islam fulfill their dream of committing a terror attack upon America that will truly destabilize our nation’s ability to counterattack. Every day counts.
