Evacuees Describe Chaos in Rebel-Held City
From Times Wire Reports
Foreigners evacuated from western Ivory Coast said rebels were looting and shooting in the streets in violence that appeared to involve Liberian militants.
French forces flew 160 people, mostly French and Lebanese merchants, from the city of Man to the commercial capital, Abidjan.
“The groups from Liberia are unbearable,” said Ashkar Louis Michel, a Lebanese man. “They enter homes and steal.”
The evacuation came after French troops fought rebels in a daylong battle for Man’s airport. Ten rebels were killed.
