Carr Suffers Knee Injury in Houston’s 17-13 Loss

The Houston Texans got a scare and lost the game too.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers knocked David Carr, the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, out of the game in the first half with a bruised right knee and took advantage of two early miscues for a 17-13 victory Friday night at Houston.

Carr was hurt with 13:57 left in the second quarter when he was pulled down by Buccaneer defensive end Corey Smith.

Carr walked off on his own and spent the rest of the half sitting on the bench with an ice pack on his knee and remained in the team’s training room in the third quarter. He returned to the sideline in the fourth quarter.

Carr completed five of nine passes for 58 yards and had two rushes for four yards.

New York Jets 23, Philadelphia 16--The Jets (4-0) got touchdowns from two players who might not make it to the season at East Rutherford, N.J.

Ataveus Cash made his first pro reception a touchdown catch and defensive tackle Geradie Mercer scored on an interception return.

Green Bay 21, Tennessee 20--Third-string quarterback Craig Nall, a fifth-round pick from Northwestern Louisiana, solidified a roster spot by leading the Packers on second-half scoring drives of 73, 46 and 82 yards at Green Bay. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 182 yards.

Billy Volek threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Berlin with eight seconds left in the game to pull the Titans to within a point, but the two-point conversion failed when the ball went off the hands of Berlin--wide open in the end zone.

Carolina 20, Cleveland 19--Nick Goings had two short touchdown runs in the fourth quarter as the Panthers rallied against the Brown reserves at Cleveland.

Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs ended his two-month holdout and signed a one-year tender. Gonzalez, who rejected an $8-million signing bonus and a long-term deal that would have approached $28 million, signed the one-year deal for $3.05 million.

Shane Matthews was named starting quarterback in the season opener for the Washington Redskins even though he threw five interceptions in six quarters of exhibition games.... Guard Leon Searcy of Miami probably will be sidelined for a third consecutive season after tearing his right triceps during the Dolphins’ 24-22 win over the Chicago Bears Thursday night.

Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet of the New York Jets signed a seven-year, $17.5-million contract that theoretically will allow him to finish his career with the team.... Linebacker Jamal Brooks of Dallas could be sidelined up to three months after fracturing his left fibula in the Cowboys’ 28-25 win over Jacksonville Thursday.
