Clashes, Other Violence Result in 18 Deaths
Colombian troops killed 11 rebels in two battles but suffered four dead in their own ranks in a third incident, officials said. Three other people died in scattered violence.
Eight members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, died near Granada, 120 miles northwest of Bogota, the army said. Three other FARC rebels were slain Monday near the town of San Vicente del Caguan.
Guerrillas from the smaller National Liberation Army, or ELN, killed four soldiers near the northern town of Carmen del Atrato. Killed elsewhere were an ELN member, a paramilitary fighter and a man slain in Medellin.
