Devices Keep Car Renters Honest
The people initiating charges against the rental car companies clearly violated the terms and conditions of the rental agreement (“Big Brother May Be Watching You in Your Rental Car,” Travel Insider, Aug. 4). In plain English, they were stealing. The deliberate misuse of these vehicles constitutes theft of service and breach of contract. The rental car companies have a right to be compensated for their vehicles’ misuse.
Is it unfair for the owners of rental vehicles to know their whereabouts to protect their companies’ interests and investments? People who rent cars for legitimate reasons and adhere to the terms of the agreement have nothing to worry about. However, some rent vehicles to commit a crime. Rental vehicles were used in the 1995 Oklahoma City and 1993 World Trade Center bombings.
In today’s uncertain environment we must be vigilant about security and safety issues. When properly used, global positioning systems can be a valuable tool in thwarting criminal acts and summoning assistance when needed. But more important, these systems help keep people honest by holding them accountable for their actions. Maybe we should be less paranoid and litigious and concern ourselves more about being honest and doing the right thing.
