An engine fire forced an Iberia Airlines 747 jumbo jet to return to John F. Kennedy International Airport shortly after takeoff.
All 386 passengers and crew members were evacuated from the Madrid-bound plane after it landed about 7:20 p.m. EDT, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac said.
Five people were taken to a hospital with injuries sustained during the evacuation. A 56-year-old man with a head injury was in serious condition, and a 60-year-old woman who briefly lost consciousness was admitted for observation.
Salac said the fire was confined to the engine.
