6 Still in Hospital After Rail Collision

Six people remain hospitalized from injuries suffered in a Placentia train crash last week that killed two people and injured 186, Metrolink officials said Monday.

Robert Kube, 59, of Moreno Valley and Lawrence Sorensen, 48, of Riverside died from blunt-trauma injuries sustained in the April 23 head-on crash between a Metrolink commuter train and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train.

A memorial service, attended by more than 350 people, was held for Kube on Sunday at Moreno Valley Christian Fellowship Church. Kube, a devout Christian with a passion for baseball, was buried Monday in Riverside.

He is survived by wife, Ann, and daughters Kelly, 22, and Krystle, 17.

Many of the injuries consisted of bruises and scratches.

Some commuters pushed out windows to escape from the wreck, while rescuers pulled out the more seriously injured. Many of their injuries included fractures, rib and back injuries and cuts.

Metrolink conductor Patrick Phillips, who said that he flew through the air after the impact and landed on the other side of the lead car, was treated and released at a local hospital on the day of the crash, but tests later revealed that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage.

The 49-year-old Riverside resident continues to suffer severe headaches, double vision and numbness, his attorney said.
