LAX Terminals Cleared; Security Test Blamed
Fifteen flights were delayed when officials at Los Angeles International Airport ordered the partial evacuation of Terminals 6 and 7 on Monday after a security screener at an X-ray machine saw what appeared to be a gun in a carry-on bag.
The incident occurred hours before President Bush landed at the airport.
The evacuation was called off after federal officials determined that the weapon had been a test image that is superimposed on a passenger’s carry-on luggage to test screeners.
Screeners are supposed to alert their bosses when they receive the tests, but this screener mistook it for a real gun, authorities said.
