Montenegro’s president left for an official visit to the U.S., seeking help with a crisis triggered by his government’s decision to forge a new union with Serbia to keep Yugoslavia together.

President Milo Djukanovic is to hold talks with Secretary of State Colin L. Powell today, the office of the Montenegrin leader said.

The visit comes amid a crisis in Montenegro, where Djukanovic’s prime minister resigned last week after unsuccessful attempts to preserve a coalition government split over the issue of independence.
