Kickback Allegations Bring Down Lawmaker

The leader of Japan’s upper house of parliament resigned in the latest in a series of money scandals that has cast a shadow over the administration of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Yutaka Inoue, president of the House of Councilors, resigned over allegations that his secretary received $490,000 in kickbacks from the president of a construction company. The alleged kickbacks involved a public works project in Inoue’s home state of Chiba, near Tokyo.
