Chinese doctors removed a cataract from the right eye of a giant panda, the first surgery of its kind, the official New China News Agency said. Doctors will know in 15 days whether the 90-minute operation with ultrasonic tools will help the 22-year-old panda, Basi.

The 410-pound Basi is considered a “god of longevity.” Panda life expectancy is 12 years, the news agency said.

She “is a nimble weightlifter, basketball player and cyclist” who performed on Chinese state television in the 1990s, the report said.
