Khalid Khannouchi broke his world record by covering the 26.2 miles in the London Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours 5 minutes 38 seconds.

Khannouchi, born in Morocco and a U.S. citizen, surpassed by four seconds his previous mark, set three years ago in Chicago.

Paula Radcliffe of Britain, in her first race at the distance, won the women’s division in 2:18:56, the second-best time in history.

Radcliffe’s time was nine seconds slower than the world mark set last year in Chicago by Kenya’s Catherine Ndereba.

Ndereba and Lee Bong-ju of South Korea will try to defend their women’s and men’s titles today in the Boston Marathon amid tight security.

As many as 600 officers, half from the Boston Police Department, are expected to run in the race, supplementing the 1,500 police, 415 National Guard troops and another 1,500 law enforcement personnel who will guard the course.
