Writer Jailed for Months Awarded

NEW YORK — Vanessa Leggett, an aspiring Texas crime writer jailed for more than five months for defying a subpoena to turn over interviews in a murder case, was named winner of the PEN First Amendment Award on Thursday.
Leggett asserted that a reporter’s privilege protected her from being forced to disclose confidential sources used in researching a book about the killing of Doris Angleton, wife of a Houston millionaire. Leggett will receive a $25,000 prize April 24 at the annual PEN Gala.
