Two people were killed and a third seriously injured Friday when a wrong-way driver slammed head-on into a car on the northbound San Joaquin Hills toll road near Newport Coast.
The wrong-way driver may have been traveling as fast as 100 mph, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The accident set off a six-vehicle collision at 6:18 p.m.
All lanes were closed while an emergency helicopter landed to take at least one person to a local hospital, officials said.
Names of those involved were not immediately available.
At least two cars burst into flames, and some people were thrown from vehicles, police said.
