Norman Hirschl, 86; American Art Expert, Founder of N.Y. Gallery
Norman S. Hirschl, 86, an expert in American paintings and a founder of the Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York City, died Tuesday at his home in Williamstown, Mass. The cause of death was not announced.
A native of New York City, Hirschl attended City College but left school to go into his uncle’s gallery business.
A specialist in the Hudson River and Ashcan schools of American painting, Hirschl opened his own gallery in 1938.
He folded it after three years and managed another prominent gallery for the next decade. In 1952, he joined Abraham Adler in opening the Hirschl & Adler Galleries.
Hirschl was president of the Art Dealers Assn. of America from 1982, the year he retired from the gallery business, to 1984.
