Los Angeles’ children need more after-school programs and more safe corridors to and from school, according to a report issued Thursday by the city’s Commission for Children, Youth and Their Families.

The report, released after a year of study, recommends that city departments collaborate with the Los Angeles Unified School District to find new school sites and that officials involve youth in decisions related to their health and safety.

The report was accompanied by recommendations from the city Youth Council, whose members presented their ideas to Mayor James K. Hahn and other city leaders at a forum in Pacoima.

The report said violence is a major concern for young people, and asked for better publicity of youth programs, more police patrols and enforcement of truancy laws.
