Vandals broke into a Catholic elementary school Sunday or Monday, badly damaging two statues, police said.

The incident at St. Augustine School at Clarington Avenue and Washington Boulevard is being investigated by Los Angeles police because part of the school is in West Los Angeles, said archdiocese spokesman Tod Tamberg.

A statue of a Virgin Mary was damaged. No arrests have been made.

“Any kind of vandalism to a religious building or symbol of religion is especially hurtful, whether it’s at a church, a mosque, a temple or a synagogue,” Tamberg said.

“It’s an attack on a symbol of something people hold most sacred.”
