Sewage Spill Closes Parts of Harbor
Parts of Newport Harbor have been closed for swimming, diving and other water sports after a sewage spill there, health officials said Wednesday.
Docks F through H at the Balboa Bay Club and the Orange Coast College Crew Docks were closed Tuesday after county Harbor Patrol crews investigated a complaint about 5:30 p.m. of a foul odor in the area, said Larry Honeybourne of the county Health Care Agency.
It was determined that the sewage came from a break in a flexible pipeline used by yachts when they are emptying their on-board toilets.
Honeybourne said it was unknown how much raw sewage spilled into the harbor. The area is expected to be reopened Friday, pending results of bacteria tests.
