Senate Confirms Defense Official
The Senate unanimously confirmed Paul Wolfowitz, a veteran of senior positions at the Defense and State departments, to be deputy secretary of Defense.
Wolfowitz, a longtime intellectual conservative voice in U.S. arms and national security issues, will hold the No. 2 job at the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.
Wolfowitz, 57, is an expert on East Asia and the Middle East who served as U.S. ambassador to Indonesia and then at the Pentagon during the 1991 Persian Gulf War in the administration of former President Bush.
