Black Politicians
* Earl Ofari Hutchinson hit the nail on the head when he described how “the opportunities for black politicians to get elected have plunged to disastrously low levels” (Commentary, Jan. 29), even though he clearly didn’t intend to. He warns that the number of safe black districts is dropping due to demographic changes and that with the exception of two conservatives “it is still virtually impossible for African Americans to win in districts without black majorities.”
Well, wake up! More than 40 years of failed liberal programs have convinced almost everyone to move on, and when a black politician like Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) puts the welfare of America ahead of his own narrow issues, he gets elected and reelected. Politicians like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) are doomed to an ever-shrinking group of supporters.
