Racism Conference
Re “Powell Misses a Chance to Rise Above ‘Isms,’ ” Commentary, Aug. 28: I am disappointed to see that Colin Powell is not going to represent the United States in Durban, South Africa, for the United Nations’ conference against racism. What better example against racism could we show the world than the first-ever African American secretary of State? All we are doing is giving up and showing the whole world that we don’t want to play with the other nations because someone might have prejudices against us and might even voice their anti-Americanism.
I have always been proud to be an American because normally in the past we have led the way in efforts like this. That’s why I cannot understand our lack of participation in this event. Powell would be the ideal candidate to represent an African American point of view at this meeting. I hate to see the United States give in to the anti-American bullies.
