FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are active along the weed edges, striking night crawlers, pig-n-jigs and spinnerbaits. Striped bass are chasing shad and a few were weighed in at 10-plus pounds.

PYRAMID LAKE--Small striped bass are being caught at the surface on top-water lures, mainly at Serrano and the island. Catfish are active at Yellow Bar and Bear Trap. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are striking small plastic worms at 20-25 feet.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Trout and catfish action is excellent. Top catfish stringer was six totaling 75 pounds, caught on mackerel at Wadleigh Arm. Trout are biting mostly at the dam. Red-ear perch are taking mealworms. Bass fishing is slow.

LAKE PIRU--Trout action is fair in deep water at the dam. Needlefish and Power Bait are getting most. Bass are being caught on most lures and night crawlers. Crappies are biting best on red-and-white mini-jigs.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing is good at the dam, with fish biting at 35-50 feet. Down-riggers are a must for trollers. Bass fishing is fair on the surface early along the cliffs and Santa Cruz Point. Catfish action is picking up in the Mohawk area.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Top catfish was one 8-pounds 12-ounces. Action is good for mostly sub-five-pounders on mackerel and shrimp.

IRVINE LAKE--Catfish action is good, with fish, averaging two-six pounds, biting on mackerel. Bass fishing has improved with a surface bite taking place early and late. White or pearl-colored plastics are best.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fishing is fair early and late, slow during the day. Trollers are doing best, catching fish to about two pounds.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout fishing remains fair early on Power Bait and night crawlers. Some limits but few big fish.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Catfish are the main attraction, biting at dusk and night, but crappies and small bass are being caught too. A five-pound bass was caught on a crankbait at the tree area.

LAKE PERRIS--A 10-pound bass was caught on a jerk bait, and another 6-6 was caught on a red plastic worm. Trout are fairly active early, but deep, biting mainly on Needlefish trolled on weighted line. Some bluegills.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are most active, with live shad, swimbaits and anchovies getting bites at the inlet. An 18-8 striper tops the list. Catfish and largemouth bass ae biting too.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--A seven-pound largemouth bass was caught on a Power Worm and a 6-8 trout was caught on a Power Bait-Power Worm combo. Fishing is slow overall.

DIXON LAKE--Night fishing for catfish is good and the average is a four-pounder. Mackerel is the top bait. Bass fishing is slow.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bluegills remain very active at Lower Otay and San Vicente, where decent bass bites also are in progress. El Capitan and Sutherland are fair for bass. Catfish are active at San Vicente, which yielded a 33-pound blue catfish. Hodges’ launch ramp is closed because of low water level.

> Eastern Sierra

BISHOP AREA--A 7-8 rainbow was caught on a Thomas Buoyant at South Lake. Fishing is fair throughout Bishop Creek Canyon but many are opting for the back-country lakes, where conditions are prime and crowds high.

MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--The perch bite at Crowley is picking up. Trout are biting best for fly fishermen using gray or green chronomids. Convict Lake produced lots of quality fish, the biggest 6-2, caught on lemon-twist Power Bait. Rock Creek Lake is a good bet for bigger fish, which are being caught by trollers using Needlefish and fly fishermen using mosquito flies.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--Silver Lake produced the bigger fish, including one 7-14 caught on Sierra Gold and another 6-5 caught on rainbow-glitter Power Bait. All the lakes are producing early and late. Rush Creek is fair with salmon eggs and small spinners.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--Top catch was a 10-10 brown trout caught on yellow Power Bait at Robinson Creek. A 6-1 rainbow was caught on rainbow Power Bait at Lower Twin. Bridgeport Reservoir remains fair at best, but the fish have been on the big side, averaging two-five pounds. The West Walker River is good and the East Walker remains tough.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--63 anglers (2 boats): 230 red rockcod, 287 rockcod, 113 rockfish.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--49 anglers (2 boats): 238 rockcod, 105 red rockcod, 85 bolina, 6 lingcod, 1 salmon (released), 1 ocean whitefish.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--35 anglers (2 boats): 3 barracuda, 14 calico bass, 1 ocean whitefish, 11 red snapper, 127 rockfish, 3 sand bass.

OXNARD (Captain Hook’s)--76 anglers (3 boats): 413 sand bass, 13 barracuda, 3 white seabass, 8 sole, 1 halibut, 1 cabezon.

PORT HUENEME--43 anglers (3 boats): 1 white seabass, 1 sheephead, 106 shallow-water rockfish, 81 sand bass, 58 sculpin, 46 whitefish, 3 lingcod, 8 red snapper.

MARINA DEL REY--150 anglers (6 boats): 78 yellowtail, 100 calico bass, 3 halibut, 323 sand bass, 4 barracuda, 100 mackerel, 12 rockfish.

REDONDO BEACH--120 anglers (6 boats): 23 calico bass, 336 sand bass, 8 barracuda, 8 halibut, 15 sculpin, 6 sole, 22 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--97 anglers (4 boats): 223 yellowtail, 1 mako shark, 268 sand bass, 112 barracuda, 1 calico bass. (22nd St. Landing)--262 anglers (7 boats): 241 yellowtail, 52 calico bass, 517 sand bass, 250 barracuda, 1 halibut, 6 sculpin, 1 whitefish.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--195 anglers (6 boats): 126 yellowtail, 109 barracuda, 6 calico bass, 418 sand bass, 1 halibut, 11 sculpin, 145 mackerel. (Marina Sportfishing)--87 anglers (3 boats): 45 barracuda, 427 sand bass, 12 sculpin, 1 black seabass (released). (Pierpoint Landing)--136 anglers (6 boats): 193 yellowtail, 79 barracuda, 14 calico bass, 685 sand bass.

NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--169 anglers (6 boats): 149 yellowtail, 136 barracuda, 8 bonito, 71 calico bass, 427 sand bass, 2 halibut, 8 sculpin. (Davey’s Locker)--242 anglers (9 boats): 200 yellowtail, 854 sand bass, 24 white seabass, 131 barracuda, 27 calico bass, 11 sculpin, 100 mackerel.
