Not So Favre-Fetched, Is It?

The UCLA tight ends had no receptions last week, and they have five in four games this season. That will change with Cory Paus back at quarterback, according to tight end Bryan Fletcher.

“A lot of the times, the tight ends are the second or third option. Cory will find you,” Fletcher said. “There’s no doubt Cory will find you. That’s one of the things Ryan struggled with, looking for that second or third option.”

Fletcher said he thought Ryan McCann played well overall but welcomed the return of Paus.

“He’s definitely a Brett Favre kind of guy,” Fletcher said of Paus. “If he has to stand there and get hit 20 times, he’ll do it. If you play with a guy like that, it gives you a certain confidence.”

Cal State Northridge has expressed interest in filling the vacancy for an opponent in the Bruins’ 2002 season opener, but UCLA wants to play a Division I-A school instead.

UCLA officials believe that playing Northridge, a Division I-AA school, would hurt the Bruins’ strength-of-schedule ratings and attendance. UCLA fans, unlike Kansas State fans, do not flock to home games against perceived weaklings, local or otherwise.

The Bruins drew only 37,965 to a 1992 game against Cal State Fullerton.
