SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Troy quarterback Jordan Oliver set a school record last year with more than 2,000 yards in total offense, but it was the Warrior running game that clicked in a 50-20 victory over Katella in front of 1,500 Friday at Fullerton High.

Troy running back Jordan McCarthy scored four touchdowns, three rushing, and Paul Evanson gained 146 yards in 19 carries in the nonleague game.

Troy (1-0) gained 358 yards and scored five of their seven touchdowns rushing.

Troy’s Ryan Welch took the opening kickoff at his own 14 and returned it 64 yards to the Knight 22. Evanson then scored on a 22-yard run.

Katella (0-1), lost starting quarterback Chris Haller to a ankle injury on the subsequent drive and junior Andre Huseman took over and played the rest of the game.

The Knights scored after Troy (1-0) fumbled at the Katella 36. Two plays later, Ruben Torres ran 64 yards to the Warrior one and scored from there on the next play to bring Katella within 7-6 after the extra-point try failed.

The teams then exchanged scores again. Troy’s Tom Osborn caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Oliver and Oliver added a two-point conversion run. The Knights answered again with a 10-yard scoring pass from Huseman to Long Duong.
