7 Arrested in Police Sweep of 10 Homes
LA HABRA — An early morning police sweep of 10 La Habra homes resulted in the arrests of five men and two youths on charges ranging from attempted murder to weapons and probation violations, authorities said Wednesday.
The arrests of Ramon Alcocer, 20; Justino Garcia, 19; David Avitia, 19; Omar Vasquez, 22; Robert Lopez, 21; and two 17-year-old males, all of La Habra, followed a recent escalation of gang-related violence throughout the city, said La Habra police Sgt. Jeff Baylos.
Police confiscated four handguns, one rifle and numerous photos.
“The last few months we’ve had an increase in gang activity between two of our gangs--Compo Street and Monos gangs--and this includes several drive-by shootings,” Baylos said.
Baylos added that no one was hurt in the drive-by shootings.
“The gangs were aligned for many years, but this year they broke off,” he said.
The seven people who were arrested allegedly belong to one of the gangs, police said. The investigation will continue, Baylos said.
