Lucent CEO Unveils New Management Order
Lucent Technologies Inc. Chief Executive Henry Schacht, who replaced the ousted Rich McGinn two weeks ago, unveiled a management shuffle designed to mesh its sales and service organizations and quicken the pace of decision making. Schacht, 66, tapped Vice Chairman Ben Verwaayen to become head of sales, marketing and services, and Executive Vice President Bob Holder gets responsibility for manufacturing, product development and managing suppliers. Chief Financial Officer Debby Hopkins will run information systems.
Schacht, who served as CEO from October 1995 to October 1997, returned when McGinn failed to engineer a quick turnaround at the biggest maker of phone equipment. He pledged to revive Lucent after a string of quarters in which profit dropped and to prepare the Murray Hill, N.J.-based company for a more permanent chief executive.
Verwaayen, 48, Holder, 54, and Hopkins, 45, will report directly to Schacht, along with Executive Vice President Bill O’Shea, Bell Laboratories President Arun Netravali and Senior Vice Presidents Rich Rawson and Kathy Fitzgerald. McGinn had 18 direct reports. Lucent shares closed off 44 cents at $24.13 on the New York Stock Exchange.
