Man Held After Shots Fired at Wife
The estranged husband of an Oxnard woman came to her home Tuesday morning and fired two gunshots at her head and missed before she escaped when the handgun malfunctioned, police said.
Anthony Martinez Gomez, 44, of Port Hueneme was arrested minutes after the incident in the 200 block of Orchard Place when a police officer saw him fleeing the scene, authorities said.
Gomez was being held at Ventura County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder Tuesday night with bail set at $500,000.
According to Oxnard detectives, Gomez had planned to kill his 50-year-old wife, Lola Diaz Gomez, when he went to her home shortly before 8 a.m. and confronted her outside as she prepared to leave for work.
Gomez forced his wife back inside her home at gunpoint and then fired twice at her head, authorities said. Those shots missed, and she escaped when the gun jammed, authorities said. The gun allegedly used in the crime was recovered.
